This video features a gloss lime green vinyl wrap on an Audi R8. The clip shows an installer walking through the process of making drop cuts and relief cuts around complex body lines and vent sections.
Drop Cut Technique
Follow these steps demonstrated in the video:
- Slightly heat up the material before laying it down.
- Work the material into place until it does not want to go anymore.
- Make a drop cut to relieve built-up air trapped under the vinyl.
- Leave roughly a quarter inch of material to fold over.
- Heat the area again and work the vinyl inward as far as possible.
After laying down the cut edge, add a relief cut along the top edge so the film can fall into place. Continue working the material completely into the corner for a clean finish.
Film Construction
Aura Vinyl vinyl wrap features a PET backing to produce a flat finish with less orange peel. The cast polymer hybrid film is paired with German-made adhesive to allow repositioning and reduce glue lines during install.
FAQ
Why do you make a drop cut when installing vinyl wrap?
A drop cut relieves built-up air that is trapped beneath the material. It also leaves an edge of material that can be folded over into the recess.
