Knifeless tape inlay between fender and pillar

An inlay between the fender and the pillar is a small step that keeps factory paint from showing at the seam. Here it is done on a silver car with knifeless tape and a tuck tool, before the full pillar is wrapped.

Steps

  1. Lay out knifeless tape along the gap between the fender and the pillar.
  2. Slide in a piece of vinyl with the backing paper still on.
  3. Hold down the front edge and remove the rest of the backing paper.
  4. Use a tuck tool to lock the material in under the knifeless tape.
  5. Pull the knifeless tape and peel away the excess.
  6. Wrap the pillar: heat it, define the edge, and cut on the opposite edge.

Tips

  • Roll the backing paper back a little before you slide the piece in. It comes off much easier.
  • Do the inlay before the pillar, so the pillar piece covers it cleanly.

FAQ

Why use a vinyl inlay between the fender and pillar?

An inlay prevents OEM paint from showing through panel gaps. It creates a cleaner look for your wrap project.

How do you easily remove vinyl backing paper in a narrow gap?

Roll the backing paper back slightly before sliding the vinyl into the gap. Then hold down the front edge to pull the rest of the backing away.

How do you finish the pillar panel over the inlay?

Heat up the film, define the edge of the panel, and cut on the opposite edge to cover the seam cleanly.
